How do precarious workers go on strike?
November 28, 2011
Are you a freelancer who does not feel very free?
Has the carrot you were promised gone off?
Join the Precarious Workers Block at the N30 Strike.
November 30, 2011
1PM, Lincoln Inn’s Field NW corner at Remnant Street
Look for the people carrying carrots!
On November 30, members of UCU, Unite, NUT, Unison and GMB unions will be on strike across the UK on the issue of pensions. How do precarious workers – those of us living off short-term contracts, internships, ‘artist’s fees’, low paid or over-worked non-contractual labour, increasingly privatised contractual labour, those who are exhausted from juggling a job-to-job, place-to-place, unionless, pensionless, infinitely flexible and silently exploitable existence – go on strike?
This Wednesday precarious workers ask this question together in solidarity with all those fighting against cuts and for re-enstatement of sustainable forms of life. This is an important test of strength which will shape the coming battle over cuts – so it is important for everyone to be out in the streets, and that ongoing organisation and co-operation comes out of the strike. We encourage everyone to spend the morning at the picket nearest to you and meet up with other precarious workers at 1pm to march together from Lincoln’s Inn Fields. If you are not unionised, make an excuse, call in sick, or get your co-workers to come along!
